Like mentioned in the first part of this article there are two types of acne scars. The two types are scars from tissue response to the inflammation of acne: increased tissue formation, and the second one is loss of tissue.

#1: Increased Tissue Formation

Scars caused by the increased formation of tissue are often called keloids and also hypertrophic scars.Hypertrophy means overgrowth or enlargement and these types of scars are usually associated with an excessive amount of a cell substance “collagen”. When there is an overproduction of collagen it is a kind of response of skin cells to injury. Due to the overproduction, collagen is being piled up in fibrous masses. This will often result in a characteristic firm, smooth and usually irregularly-shaped, scar. The Keloids are often inherited, being a part of your genes. There is a genetic predisposition to form keloids after tissue injury that especially African-Americans tend to have. These kinds of inherited keloids also “run in the families” of not only African-Americans but also often South-Americans and Asians tend to form tese kinds of hypertrophic acne scars. #2: Acne Scars As A Result Of Loss of Tissues

Acne scars resulting from loss of tissue are the most common type of acne scars and alot more common than scars resulting from increased tissue formation. There are various types of acne scars resulting from loss of tissues:
Ice-pick acne scars are named after their appearance. They can be both superficial or deep and are usually small in diameter. They also have steep sides like an ice-pick wound which is how they got their name in the first place. They can be soft or hard touch. The soft acne scars are the ones that usually are more superficial while the hard scars are being deeper. While the scar at the surface of the skin may look rather small the base of the hard scars under your skin may actually be alot wider and deeper than the scar on the surface.
Depressed fibrotic acne scars are another type of scars that are usually large in size and have sharp margins and steep sides. They are often looking similar to the scars of deep chicken pox. Also this type of acne has both superficial and deep soft acne scars and they are variable in size as well as appearance but they usually have sloping edges that is merging into the normal skin.
